Admin

This is the role assigned to users that are updating and managing this site.

Annotation

An entry in the database to capture factual information or updates about a database object. An annotation is used to catpure information about who is updating the database and provides an audit trail of changes and updates. Only people assigned with a role that has permissions can view or add annotations.

An annotation consists of the following information:

  • Who (unique person ID (PID)) is adding the annotation
  • When it was made (timestamp).
  • The type of object it relates to (person, certificate, photograph, etc.)
  • The unique object identifier.
  • A timestamp.
  • The content.

    Archive

    The contents of the behind this web site and the documents, photographs and other media are backed up and archived onto other storage media at regular intervals. Typically, this will occur monthly. At the end of each year, the whole data set is duplicated onto one or more DVDs and a copy of the full data set is then securely distributed to each researcher, to ensure no data is lost. The is exported and archived as XML.

    Certificate

    A certificate is considered a specific type of document.

    Comment

    An entry in a database table to capture general comments about a database object. A comment is a less formal form of an annotation and allows a user to for example, pose a question about something for others to see and answer.

    Contributor

    This is the typical role assigned to user of this site and gives the user permissions to browse, search and contribute to this site.

    Database

    The information behind this web site is stored in a MySQL database. The database is split into tables (or sections) for:

    This set of tables will be extended in the future as new services and features are added.

    Document

    An electronic or scanned paper document which exists as a physical file and also as an object in the database.

    Family Tree

    Most of the known Collingridge's fall within one of 8 main groups or family trees:
    1. The Finmere and Tingewick tree headed by Christopher COLLINGRIDGE {129} (c1744 - 1800). This tree has a large Canadian contingent. Entry into the database is about 98% complete..

    2. The Godington tree headed by Thomas COLLINGRIDGE {547} (c1772 - 1854). It covers Hethe in Oxfordshire and the Stoney Stratford region. Entry into the database is about 95% complete.

    3. This tree is headed by Edmund COLLINGRIDGE {640} but is actually a more detailed subtree within tree 4 and Edmund is a son of the Edmund {682} mentioned below. Entry into the database is about 99% complete.

    4. This tree is headed by Edmund COLLINGRIDGE {682}. This tree covers the Covent Garden Collingridge's and the clock makers and goldsmiths in the family. Entry into the database is about 15% complete.

    5. This tree is headed by William COLLINGRIDGE. It covers the Bloxham, Wroxton, Wiggington and Warick areas. Entry into the database is about 20% complete.

    6. This tree is headed by Edmund COLLINGRIDGE {143} (c1733 - 1802) of Godington. Entry into the database is about 25% complete.

    7. This tree is headed by Joseph COLLINGRIDGE {873} (c1785 - unknown) and covers the Hammersmith and Chelsea area of London. Entry into the database is 100% complete.

    8. This tree is headed by Mark COLLINGRIDGE {905} (c1760 - ?/11/1803) and covers the Collingridges of Stony Stratford and Gedford. Entry into the database is 100% complete.

    Forums

    As part of this website, there will be a set of discussion forums, which can be accessed by with a role of member or higher.

    Note: The forums have yet to be switched on but should be made available soon.

    Guest

    This is the role assigned to people who have not filled in the registration form and have not logged into this site. These are essentially members of the public as far as this site is concerned and have access to a limited set of data and functionality.

    Media

    A generic term to describe archived, digital objects that are not directly stored in the database. These include photographs, certificate and other scanned documents.

    Member

    This is the typical role assigned to user of this site and gives the user permissions to browse, search and contribute to this site.

    Object

    A uniquely identifiable and referenced element in the database, such as a person, document, marriage, divorce, photograph, etc. Objects have associated with them comments and annotations.

    Object Id (OID)

    The uniquely reference number which identitifies each object in the database. These are displayed on this web site like this: [2]. A person ID (PID) is a special type of object ID (OID), which identifies a person in the database.

    Pending

    This is the role assigned to people who have filled in and submitted the registration form. The admin team will be notified of this new registration via e-mail and will then validate the submitted information and assign a new role. User with the role of pending have limited permissions.

    Permissions

    Guests and users of this site are granted permissions, via the assignment of a role. The permissions restrict the number of search results and the amount of detail in the search results. They also control what elements of the web site can be accessed and what features can be used by each user.

    Person

    A unique individual stored in the database and with an assocaiated person ID (PID).

    Person ID (PID)

    Every person in the database is assigned a unique PID, to allow relationship between people to be defined and to ensure that researcher are talking about the same person. These are displayed on this web site like this: {1023}.

    Portrait

    When displaying detail about people a portrait is displayed on the web page, if one is held on record. A portrait is 80 x 100 pixels in size. All portraits are made available to the open Internet, to improve the graphical nature of this site. All users have the right to delete or change their own portraits, should they so wish.

    Registration

    The process of completing and submitting the registration form, it being validated and the admin team being confident of your identity.

    Researcher

    This is the role assigned to users of this site that have done significant research and are actively updating the content of the database. Researchers have unrestricted access to all data and site features, the only restriction being that they cannot delete database objects. This role is assigned to very few people.

    Role

    This website uses a set of defined roles to enforce access permissions to the features and data held in the database.

    Tag

    A person in the database can be tagged in an object such as a photograph, which results in an association between them. This means that you can search for photographs or other media featuring a particular person, so long as those associations or tags have been previous made and added by users.

    User

    A user is anyone that has been through the registration process and has logged onto this website. Each user has a unique user ID (UID).

    User ID (UID)

    A user ID is a unique name used to access this website. Each user may also have a person ID (PID).
